Time Tracking

Truetask includes native time tracking — a one-click timer, manual time entries, and timesheets for reporting. No third-party service required.

The Global Timer

The timer button lives in the top toolbar and is visible from every page. When a timer is running, you see elapsed time ticking up next to the button.

Start a timer

Three ways to start:

  1. From a task — open the task, click the timer icon in its toolbar
  2. From the global toolbar — click the timer button, pick a task from your recent list
  3. From an existing timer — click the running timer to stop it, then start a new one on a different task

Stop a timer

Click the running timer in the toolbar, then click Stop. The time entry is automatically logged on the task with the duration.

Timer behavior

  • Persists across navigation — starting a timer on one board and moving to another doesn't stop it
  • One at a time — each user can have only one timer running
  • Auto-stop — runs longer than 8 hours are automatically stopped and logged (so a forgotten timer doesn't skew reports)
  • Green indicator — when a timer is active on a task, its timer icon shows a green dot

Manual Time Entries

Sometimes you want to log time you already spent — not every minute happens while the app is open. Manual entries cover that.

  1. Open a task
  2. Go to the Activity tab in the detail view
  3. Click Log Time
  4. Enter the date, duration, and optional notes
  5. Save

Manual entries appear alongside timer-based entries in the task's activity feed and in all reports.

Editing and Deleting Entries

Click any time entry in the activity feed to edit:

  • Date
  • Duration
  • Notes

Click the trash icon to delete an entry entirely.

Timesheets Pro

The Timesheets page aggregates time tracking data across every user and board you have access to. Open it from the sidebar.

Pivot view

The default layout is a pivot table:

  • Rows — users
  • Columns — time periods (day / week / month)
  • Cells — total hours logged

Filter by date range, specific user, or specific board to focus on what matters.

Board breakdown

Switch to the board view to see time aggregated by board instead of by date — useful for project-based reporting ("how many hours did we spend on Client X this quarter?").

Export

Export timesheets as CSV using the Export button on either view. The export respects your current filters.

Time in Activity Feeds

Every time entry on a task appears in the Activity tab of the task detail, showing:

  • Who logged the time
  • Duration
  • Date and time
  • Optional notes

All team members with access to the task can see the entries — time data is not private by default.

Tips

  • Use the Recent Tasks popover in the timer toolbar to resume timing a task you worked on earlier
  • The 8-hour auto-stop is there so a timer left running overnight doesn't spoil your reports — you can always adjust the entry manually afterwards
  • Export timesheet data at the end of billing periods for invoicing or client reports
  • Combine timesheets with board filtering — you can get "hours for Client X tasks last week" in a couple of clicks
