Kanban View

The kanban view is the default way to look at a board. Tasks appear as cards inside vertical columns (lists), and you drag them from one column to the next as work progresses.

Reading a Card

Every card can show any combination of:

  • Title — the task name
  • Priority indicator — a colored dot for High, Medium, or Low priority
  • Cover color — a small strip at the top when a cover is set
  • Tags — colored labels below the title
  • Members — avatars of assigned users
  • Due date — highlighted in red when overdue
  • Checklist progress — a progress bar with completion count
  • Attachments and comments — icons with counts when present
  • Description preview — a line or two of the description when there's no space for a cover

You choose which of these to show in the Display Preferences panel — see Board Toolbar for the full list.

Drag and Drop

  • Between lists — change a task's status
  • Within a list — reorder tasks
  • Into a done list — automatically marks the task complete
  • Out of a done list — marks it incomplete again

Opening a Task

  • Click a card to open it in the side panel
  • Double-click or Shift+Click to open it in a floating frame (good for comparing two tasks side-by-side)
  • Cmd/Ctrl+Click to open in a new browser tab

The default click behavior can be changed in Display Preferences → Behaviour.

Creating a Task

Click + Add at the bottom of any list and type a title. Press Enter to create and the card appears immediately.

If AI is enabled for your account, an AI icon appears next to the new card. Click it to:

  • Generate a description from the title
  • Suggest a checklist breakdown
  • Auto-tag the task based on its content

Enable these per-card helpers in Display Preferences → AI.

List Actions

Right-click a list header (or use the three-dot menu) for:

ActionDescription
RenameEdit the list name inline
Edit descriptionAdd Markdown explaining the list's purpose
Set colorAccent the list header with a color
Mark as doneTasks moved here are auto-completed
Move all tasksBulk-move every task to another list
Archive all tasksBulk-archive every task
DeleteRemove the list (Truetask asks what to do with its tasks)

Performance

Kanban uses virtual scrolling — only cards visible on screen are rendered. Your board stays fast even with hundreds of tasks per list.

Customizing Appearance

The Display Preferences panel in the board toolbar controls how kanban looks:

  • Card density — compact to spacious
  • Card corners — sharp to fully rounded
  • Column width and gap — for your preferred layout
  • Which fields show on cards — toggle any element on or off

These are per-user preferences — your teammates have their own settings. See Board Toolbar for every option.
